"[from her tape, which Dan is listening to] Hello, Dan. Are you surprised? This is what you’ve reduced me to. I guess you thought you'd get away with it. Well... you can't. 'Cause part of you is growing inside of me, and that's a fact, Dan. You'd better start... learning how to deal with it. ‘Cause, you know, I... I feel you. I taste you. I think you. I touch you. Can you understand? Can you? I'm just... asking you... to acknowledge your responsibilities. Is that so bad? I-I-I don't think so. I mean, I don't think it's unreasonable. And... you know, another thing... is that you thought you could just walk into my life, and turn it upside down, without a thought for anyone but yourself. You know what you are, Dan? You are a cock-sucking son of a bitch. I hate you. I bet you don't even like real girls, do you? Ha! You disappoint me, you fucking faggot!"
"[to Dan, who is listening to another taped message] You thought you could just walk into my life without a thought for anybody but yourself. You know what you are, Dan? You’re a cock-sucking fucking son of a bitch. You are. I bet you don’t even like girls, do you? They probably scare you. Well, I know I do. So you’re scared of me, aren’t you? You’re fucking frightened of me, huh? You’re afraid. You’re afraid, aren’t you? You gutless, heartless, spineless bastard. I hate you. You deserve everything you get!"
"[to Beth] What are you doing here? Why are you here? He tried...to say goodbye to me last night. But he couldn't because...he and I feel the same way about each other. Do you know how it is when you meet somebody for the first time? And you get this instant attraction. And don't you think I understand what you're doing? You're trying to move him into the country...and you're keeping him away from me. And you're playing happy family. Aren't you? [begins to slice her own leg with a butcher knife] You wouldn't understand that because you're so...so selfish. He told me about you. He told me about you. He was very honest. If you weren't so stupid, you'd know that. But you're so stupid. You're so stupid! You're a stupid, selfish bitch!"
"Once the woman begins behaving as if she had a right to a share in the lawyer's life, she becomes the dreaded lunatic of horror movies. But with a difference: she parrots the aggressively angry, self-righteous statements that have become commonplaces of feminist fiction, and they're so inappropriate to the circumstances that they’re the proof she's loco. They're also Lyne's and the scriptwriter James Dearden's hostile version of feminism."
"[to Jimmy] She keeps calling the apartment. Every time Beth answers the phone, she hangs up. I'm scared Jimmy, and I don't want to lose my family."
"It's about men seeing feminists as witches, and, the way the facts are presented here, the woman is a witch. She terrorizes the lawyer and explains his fear of her by calling him a faggot. This shrewd film also touches on something deeper than men's fear of feminism: their fear of women, their fear of women's emotions, of women's hanging on to them."
"[to Dan] Well, what am I supposed to do? You won't answer my calls, you change your number. I mean, I'm not gonna be ignored, Dan!"
"When it first began.... Who knows when anything really begins? When Dick first told me the plan, it didn't even seem real. Then, the closer we got, the more real it became. Like the crazy stunt had a life of its own and nothing could stop it. Like I was reading a story...and I had to know what was gonna happen. How it would end."
"I despise people who can't control themselves."
"Someday, somebody will explain to me the motive of a newspaper. First, you scream, "Find the bastards." Till we find them, you want to get us fired. When we find them, you accuse us of brutality. Before we go into court, you give them a trial by newspaper. When we finally get a conviction, you want to save them by proving they were crazy in the first place."
"I'd like to apologize, but... who to?"
"It doesn't make sense. I mean what happened. It had nothing to do with the Clutters. They never hurt me. They just happened to be there. I thought Mr. Clutter was a very nice gentleman... I thought so right up to the time I cut his throat."

"Doctors. They made a dwarf out of me. Doctors and lawyers. What do they care? Ever see a millionaire fry in the electric chair? Hell, no. There's two kinds of laws, honey: One for the rich and one for the poor."
"Gerald S. O'Loughlin - Harold Nye"
"Mercy for them. The killers. How fortunate that their amicable attorneys were not present at the Clutter house on that fateful evening. How very fortunate for them that they were not present that evening to plead mercy for the doomed family, because otherwise, they would have found their corpses too. If you allow them life imprisonment, they will be eligible for parole in 7 years. That is the law. Gentlemen, 4 of your neighbors were slaughtered like hogs in a pen by them. They did not strike suddenly in the heat of passion, but for money. They did not kill in vengeance, they planned it for money. And how cheaply those lives were bought. $40. $10 a life. They drove 400 miles to come here. They brought their weapons with them. [picks up a shotgun] This shotgun. [picks up a knife] This dagger. '[picks up a rope] This is the rope they hogtied their victims with. [picks up a vile of blood]]] This is the blood they spilled. Herb Clutter's. They who had no pity, now ask for yours. They who had no mercy, now ask for yours. They who shed no tears, now ask for yours. If you have tears to shed, weep not for them, weep for their victims. [picks up a copy of the Holy Bible] From the way the Holy Bible was quoted here today, You might think the word of God was written only to protect the killers, but they didn't read you this: Exodus 20:13: "Thou shalt not kill." Or this: Genesis 9:12: "Who so sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed.""

"They wanted a tenant in the worst way. And that's what they got."
"[as James Danforth in the interrogation room] They're lying. These people are completely pathological. They took 1/2 a year's rent from me and they said I never paid them. They evicted me, they slandered me, they totally destroyed my credit. They physically assaulted me. They threatened my life. And now this. These people are parasites. Florence. [sighs] I am so sorry... that you were even touched by any of this. Oh, God, I'm so embarrassed. When I first met you, I was enchanted and I... I was dazzled. I'm sorry. No, it's not like I can't prove they're lying. I can prove, they're lying. It's gonna take a little time. [sighs] I'll have to take them to court, I guess, but for right now it's my word against theirs, isn't it? I don't know what these people want. You know that if they hadn't tied up my trust, I would never ask you for anything. But if the bail isn't paid, I can't get out of here, and I cannot prove to you, Sir. What I hope Florence already knows in her heart. At least I would hope that you know. Look... I'm just asking you to do... whatever it is your heart tells you to do."
