"Yeast has a mysterious power, the ability to acidify everything, to never stop, to change everything it comes into contact with. Women expect precisely this mysterious effectiveness from it. If we are the dough, then heaven is the yeast that does not abandon us with its effectiveness until we have become something else. This effectiveness is determined by God and is what he, in his Providence, expects for us. The essential thing is that the flour and the yeast meet; the effectiveness can then be left to the yeast. But, as in the parable of the mustard seed, the seed must be placed in the field, so here the yeast must be kneaded into the dough. What in the parable is the work, the performance of the man or woman, outside of metaphor is what the man who trusts in the grace that transforms him does."
