"For two years, more or less, while hostilities lasted, the Malagasy Catholics, left without priests, were able to maintain their religion-thanks to the devotion and energy of Victoire Rasoamanarivo."
"If you must have blood, begin by shedding mine; but fear shall not keep us from assembling for prayer."
"To inculturate means discovering the meeting point of prayer (lex orandi) and of Christian faith (lex credendi) with the prayer and faith of Traditional Religions of Africa and Madagascar."
"It is not only humans who are controlled by fihavanana but the whole cosmos with all elements that form it: the stars, the mineral world, the vegetable world, the animal world, the human body, etc.. and that give us some examples of fihavanana in negative or positive. Many proverbs express and show these statements. From this value of fihavanana, theological reflection on truths of the Christian revelation has been done with adjustments, purification and the necessary overcoming."
"The new Pontiff, as he has said himself, will act in continuity with his predecessor Pope John Paul II, that is, he will continue along the path of ecumenical and interreligious dialogue, the implementation of Vatican II, the search for peace and security for all. The latter is particularly dear to the hearts of Africans, victims of decades of war for which the international community finds it hard to provide suitable solutions."
"Our communion with the universal Church is fundamental but it is not a real communion without uniting our differences. We promote a "communion in diversity". What is important is for our experiences to be recognised and respected. The Bishops personally and in collegiality know how to understand in the culture of Madagascar what is compatible with the Gospel. Moreover we want our local Church to bring to Catholicism the graces of her witness."
"We cannot mediate without preliminary formation, otherwise it is guaranteed to fail. Mediators need to stay united if they wish to do their job properly."
"A large number of programs of the Church in Africa still depend largely on the conditions of the donors. This state effectively threatens the autonomy and propriety on one hand, on the other there is the threat of putting into place projects or structures that are not right for the local Church and recipients. For this, mutual trust and understanding by both parties is necessary in order to avoid tainted gifts."
"With his heart, he sees what happens thousands of kilometers away and is invisible to most eyes. This Co-Cathedral—which was built by 200 poor stonemasons, both men and women—will allow the people to feel closer to God."
"If we were truly Christians, we would not be where we are. How deep is our faith in reality? Numbers are a good thing, but not the most important. If we profess the faith, but the next day set upon our neighbor, and if we take no interest in other people's lives—then we are not fully living our faith."
"We take advantage of this grace that the Lord offers us to correct the failures of our national life. Even if the churches are full of faithful, it is certain that faith is not yet well rooted. The deepening of the faith is insufficient."
Young though he was, his radiant energy produced such an impression of absolute reliability that Hedgewar made him the first sarkaryavah, or general secretary, of the RSS.
- Gopal Mukund Huddar
Largely because of the influence of communists in London, Huddar's conversion into an enthusiastic supporter of the fight against fascism was quick and smooth. The ease with which he crossed from one worldview to another betrays the fact that he had not properly understood the world he had grown in.
Huddar would have been 101 now had he been alive. But then centenaries are not celebrated only to register how old so and so would have been and when. They are usually celebrated to explore how much poorer our lives are without them. Maharashtrian public life is poorer without him. It is poorer for not having made the effort to recall an extraordinary life.
I regret I was not there to listen to Balaji Huddar's speech [...] No matter how many times you listen to him, his speeches are so delightful that you feel like listening to them again and again.
By the time he came out of Franco's prison, Huddar had relinquished many of his old ideas. He displayed a worldview completely different from that of the RSS, even though he continued to remain deferential to Hedgewar and maintained a personal relationship with him.
