James Bernoulli... recognises the difficulty of determining the fibres which are neither extended nor compressed, but he comes to the conclusion that the same force applied at the extremity of the same lever will produce the same effect, whether all the fibres are extended, all compressed or part extended and part compressed about the axis of equilibrium. In other words the position of the axis of equilibrium is indifferent. This result is expressed by the fourth Lemma and is of course inadmissible."
