"As I see it, there are three stages of science fiction. The first is inventing things: telepathy-geez, wow, gosh!; robots-wow! The second stage is what [Isaac] Asimov does with his robot stories, where you construct a plausible society for this to happen in. And the third when you use it for some other purpose. I think that Delany and Disch and Le Guin and Gene Wolfe and I are third-stage writers."
