"Eight months had passed since the Enquirer story when, on a Sunday night in February 1990, there was a knock at the door of the home Shelley shared with her mother. She opened it to find a young woman who introduced herself as Audrey Lavin. She was a producer for the tabloid TV show A Current Affair. Lavin told Shelley that she would do nothing without her consent. Shelley felt herself flush, and turned Lavin away. The next day, flowers arrived with a note. Lavin wrote that Shelley was âof American historyââboth a âpart of a great decision for womenâ and âthe truest example of what the âright to lifeâ can mean.â Her desire to tell Shelleyâs story represented, she wrote, âan obligation to our gender.â She signed off with an invitation to call her at Seattleâs Stouffer Madison Hotel. Ruth contacted their lawyer. âIt was like, âOh God!ââ Shelley said. â âI am never going to be able to get away from this!ââ The lawyer sent another strong letter. A Current Affair went away."
