Merely learned men should know that they have no prescriptive or exclusive right to God’s approval, but that this is the need only of the honest man, whether he be clothed in silken robes or in the humblest apparel of the poor. This is the Elixir and the Water of Life, and the medicine so much talked of under the name of the Philosopher’s Stone at least, practically considered; though theoretically it may point to a special knowledge... not to be expressed in words."
