"Christians are those who, like Simon, believe in God's love (1 Jn 4:16). And the nets are filled. Simon, faced with this miracle, feels stunned, inadequate: Lord, depart from me, for I am a sinful man. Jesus responds with a beautiful reaction, a wonder that enchants me. He transports Simon to a totally different plane, supremely indifferent to his past and his sins, he is not impressed by anyone's faults, he pronounces and creates the future: Do not be afraid. You will be a fisher of men. You will gather them from that bottom where they believe they live and do not live; you will show them that they are made for another breath, another sky, another life! You will gather them for life. When fish are caught, it is for death. But not for men: to fish means to capture alive, it is the verb used in the Bible to indicate those who are saved from death in battle and left alive (Joshua 2:13; 6:25; 2 Samuel 8:2...). In the battle for life, man will be saved, protected from the abyss into which he risks falling, brought to light."
