The couple had two sons: William, Prince of Wales and Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, born on June 21, 1982, and September 15, 1984, respectively. However, the couple's marriage was unsuccessful; they separated in 1992 and divorced on August 28, 1996. The princess died in a fatal car accident in Paris on 31 August 1997.
