He had only the Classical sources to work with, practically no correct Oriental texts, and about other parts of the world only the occasional reports of travellers … with these insufficient instruments, he worked out what seems to elude modern researchers. His knowledge of the pre-Sokratics is far more extensive than what can be derived from Hermann Diels, that bible of current scholarship, yet it remains this side of wrong guesses. His Origine may be judged extreme, but it is sound, coherent and impressive."
