"We're a very close-knit family, and I think you're born with that. Then comes the personality of each one, it never crossed my mind what I was going to experience, or what my life would become. But I don't regret anything, and I'd choose it all again"
"Eagles don’t fly with pigeons, OK? So go get your bread crumbs and get back to me tomorrow."
"It was gradual, because even in Argentina it was difficult, they always looked for a hair in the egg. It was like wanting to dirty a lot of things that sometimes were true and sometimes weren't. I was 15 years old and I saw the cover of Crónica: “The new girlfriend,” and it was with a showgirl with feathers. And I came from high school, nuns' uniform, but well, they were stages that everyone overcame in their own way. Nobody is born knowing anything about life itself, and maybe mistakes serve you so you don't make them again."

"I'm interested in how intelligence works, in people and in animals. (I don't think you can understand the former without the latter!) My research starts from a distributed model of intelligence called reactive, behavior-based reasoning. This approach has produced the first robots that can reliably interact with the real world at realistic, animal-like speeds. However, by the time I started working on this problem in 1993, it was already obvious that the approach wasn't scaling very well. In other words, no new purely behavior-based robots have come out that could behave in a significantly more complex way than the early projects such as Herbert and Polly ."
"The best supported theory in science is the theory of evolution. We don't understand evolution perfectly, but we understand it better than we understand gravity. If you don't know basic evolution theory, you will have trouble understanding not only biology, but also modern theories of society (including religion) and intelligence (including artificial intelligence). If you aren't getting a good background on evolution at school, try reading some of the links off John Wilkins's Evolution Links page."
"I was born in South Africa and I lived there until I finished my Ph.D. I loved living in South Africa. I love big open spaces and blue skies. But South Africa doesn’t really focus on space science, and that is one of the reasons I moved to Europe. I am now living in London. I enjoy living in London, but the weather can be very dreary; I find winters particularly difficult. However, I do live in a really nice part of London, which is close to a park and near the river."
"I enjoy sports, although I’m not good at any. I’m not one of those people who just says they’re bad, I really am uncoordinated, but for some reason I enjoy things anyway. At MIT I played soccer with The Cold Booters (I founded their C-league team) and D-league ice hockey with the Halting Problem in 1995 & 2000 (I got to play D league 2 years because I never learned to skate). In Edinburgh I managed to find 3 different weekly bad soccer games. When I first came to Bath, sometimes the Math & CS grad students let me play football with them, and Marina De Vos played squash with me, but then I ran out of time for that. More often I hill walk (mostly to work in Bath), cycle (mostly to work in Mannheim) and very occasionally play"

For example, if you are a judge responsible for grounding a decision in law, you cannot rest that on an approximation of previous cases unknown to you. You want an AI system that helps you retrieve specific, well-documented cases, not one that confabulates fictional cases. You need to ensure you procure the right kind of AI for a task, and the right kind is determined in part by the essentialness of human responsibility."

"The country is ruled by a kleptocratic elite that has grown rich off the back of money stolen from its people. Until 2019, its autocratic dictator was Nursultan Nazarbayev. In Kazakhstan, just 162 people own 55% of the wealth — mostly members of Nazarbayev's family or close associates. The country has a poor human rights record and little media freedom... There is Dariga Nazarbayeva and her rumoured husband Kairat Sharipbayev. Dariga is Nazarbayev's eldest daughter. Her empire, estimated by Forbes at $595 million, is hidden in an incredibly complex system of offshore companies, foundations and trusts. Three of her London properties were subject to a failed unexplained wealth order, but investigators at Source Material allege that Nazarbayeva may have misled the UK High Court. Meanwhile, Sharipbayev is allegedly one of the beneficiaries of a $334 million fraud at Kazakh bank Bank RBK, which has been labelled "the bank of the Nazarbayev family"."
