"In one case, Amazon negotiated a memorandum of understanding with a police department in Florida, discovered through a public records request filed by journalist Caroline Haskins, which showed that police were incentivized to promote the Neighbors app and for every qualifying download they would receive credits toward free Ring cameras. The result was a âself-perpetuating surveillance network: more people download Neighbors, more people get Ring, surveillance footage proliferates, and police can request whatever they want,â Haskins writes. Surveillance capacities that were once ruled over by courts are now on offer in Appleâs App Store and promoted by local street cops. As media scholar Tung-Hui Hu observes, by using such apps, we âbecome freelancers for the stateâs security apparatus."

"You cannot write a non-political book anywhere in the world. Because politics colours each characterâs way of thinking, way of relating to other people and so on. You see, each time there has been a regime change in Pakistan, I have felt myself changing. During the time of Bhutto, the women around us felt very energised. I was joining womenâs committees, we were doing progressive things. And when Zia came, we sort of wilted and all the energy just drained away from us. Then Benazir came, and we all felt different. So it influenced us, as people, as characters. It influences how men look at us. You see? So the dynamics between people change. Itâs all related to politics, to culture, to your environment. It all influences you."
