"I was never interested in studies. And honestly, I never felt I had it in me to make good music. I guess, the environment in which I grew up â dad neck-deep in music, my sister Bavatharini on the piano all the time and brother Karthik Raja constantly hooked on the latest music technology â just stirred me to take the first step. âThuluvatho Ilamaiâ and âPoovellam Kaettupaarâ proved to be turning points."
"Iâm camera shy. But I had to do a portfolio for my world tour. So Karthik of Dreamcast and I worked in tandem and conceptualised the shoot. I wanted a rock star look. Possibly, with just a bit of the face showing. Since the show is full of surprises, I wanted the promo photos too to kindle curiosity."
"Iâve no regrets in my personal and professional life. Being a spiritual person, I believe whatever happens, happens for the good. I simply follow what dad says, âWith music, you can reach out and spread happiness.â"
"Karthik Raja is immensely talented. Itâs unfortunate he hasnât got the right break. Be it technology, manuscript or knowledge of genres, he is thorough. Iâm sure he will make it ASAP."
"Dad is a man of few words. He rarely discusses my compositions. But I hear him humming my numbers to my nephew. The recent one is a hit from the Telugu flick âOyâ. A musical genius in the family is both a huge advantage and a disadvantage. Iâve absorbed so much from my father. But, at the same time, fans keep writing to me saying they expect more from me â because of my lineage!"
"My mindâs buzzing with scripts. I want to do something really different. A long-term goal is to open an orphanage for kids. Iâve envisioned something of huge proportions. But first let me make the money for it."
"Dad used to say itâs [live recording] the backbone for any musical endeavour. And Iâve realised that with time. So most often, my re-recordings are live. Technology does enhance music, but the warmth of a live orchestra is incomparable. Fans wrote to me after âOru DevadaiâŚâ (âVaamananâ) saying the score had a divine quality. Thatâs because it was done live. Besides, Iâm also conscious of the employment problem that technology-driven music creates."
"The magic happens only when the artist serves with love and the listener receives with the same spirit."
"Thank you, if you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you will enjoy the playing more."
"Pt. Ravi Shankar's Sitar played for our souls. His music helped us sooth our nerves. His smile was like his music."
"An hour of the real thing. Ravi Shankar, a wonderful virtuoso, played his own Indian music to us at the radio station. Brilliant, fascinating, stimulating, wonderfully played. Unbelievable skill and invention."
"Without...Yehudi Menuhin, the West may not have found Indian classical music and decades later...thanks to Menuhinâs chance meeting and later lasting friendship with the master sitarist Ravi Shankar, the Wets witnessed the sublimity that the merging of the Western and Indian classical music could produce."
"I didn't start with rock or jazz musicians. It was just my great dear friend whom I miss very much who is no more, Yehudi Menuhin, Lord Yehudi Menuhin. We got very friendly from the year 1952. And when I came to Europe and started performing, we cut three albums in those days, known as "West Meets East." And then I did many other things later on, of course. My student George Harrison, who is like my son, and a great friend of mine, whom I taught sitar initially but later on he was so interested he composed a lot of songs being influenced by our Indian music and Indian spiritual and religious teachings, things like that. And I've done a lot of experimentations, which I don't like to call fusion or trying to mix Indian music or Western music like a cocktail to make it interesting. Genuinely what I wanted to do is have the base as pure as possible Indian music within the framework of raga and tala, and use non-Indian musicians, non-Indian instruments for a special sound, for the range, for the volume, for the colors and all that. And I think some of them came out nice. Of course I was very much criticized also for it..."
"Thank you. If you appreciate the tuning so much, I hope you'll enjoy the playing more."
"Sound is God."
