In the case of spontaneous CPV, the Lagrangian is explicitly CP invariant, but at the symmetry breaking phase transition a CP invariant high temperature vacuum state undergoes a transition to a state where the vacuum solutions break CP either way. This mechanism may be compared to the spontaneous formation of ferromagnetic domains when a piece of unmagnetized iron cools below the critical temperature in the absence of a magnetic field.
