"In the Vedic tradition, the belief in first reincarnation and then a 'karmic' connection between the successive incarnations is clearly a later import. It is absent from the Rg-Veda, and its introduction from outside is explicitly mentioned in Chandogya Upanishad 5:5:7. ... The old Upanishads are concerned with defeating Avidya (metaphysical ignorance, confusing the Self with its objects of experience), not with ending the cycle of rebirth, as Buddhism is."
