Despite liking this statement, I believed the attribution dubious when I first encountered it in recent years — but had not gotten around to even beginning to sufficiently investigate it for early sourcing until now. The ultimately unsourced attribution to Van Gogh seems to have only become common in recent years, and the earliest attribution I have yet located occurred in the 1990s. Prior to that, for many years, at least since 1908 a nearly identical remark was attributed to Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. I will attempt to further investigate the history of the attributions in the coming day — and modify the Van Gogh page accordingly.
