While Gandhi was in charge of a company of stretcher bearers, he did not run a hospital. The origin of this quote can be found in a number of business publications in the 1940s. A version attributed to Gandhi in a 1970 advertisement in Foreign Trade of India states "A customer is the most important visitor on our premises." The quote is the motto of Bombay Hospital, but no attribution to Gandhi is currently given."
