Phocas was defeated by Heraclius in a civil war, and had been abandoned by his supporters as Heraclius and his army arrived at Constantinople. He was captured and brought before the new emperor, who asked him, "Is this how you have ruled, wretch?" When Phocas gave this reply, an enraged Heraclius beheaded him on the spot.
