"First hand reporting shows that while major riots took place in UP and Hyderabad, Advani's rathyatra itself was practically riot-free. One riot (death toll zero) did take place when students protested against Advani's refusal to join them in condemning Prime Minister V.P. Singh's policy of alloting reservations to the Other Backward Castes. As this stand of Advani's contradicted the usual story of the BJP being "upper-caste chauvinist", it went unreported in the world media."
