"Manifest Destiny and imperialism were traps into which the nation was led in 1846 and in 1899, and from which it extricated itself as well as it could afterward."
"It’s an honor to represent the province I grew up visiting my lola and lolo."
"To my fellow Asians — please recognize how our status as a model minority is weaponized against the Black community."
"La Union is where I fell in love with the Philippines and developed my dream of building a life here."
"I am now also honored to represent my Elyucana identity and ancestral roots by carrying the title of Miss Universe Philippines – La Union."
"The challenges facing our world are great."
"We don’t inherit the world from our ancestors; rather, we borrow it from our children."
"Our whole economy is based on planned obsolescence, and everybody who can read without moving his lips should know it by now. We make good products, we induce people to buy them, and then next year we deliberately introduce something that will make those products old-fashioned, out of date, obsolete. ... It isn’t organized waste. It’s a sound contribution to the American economy."
"Matt Koehl is now, and always has been, a cultist who worships the past at the expense of the future. He can quote extensively from almost every German manual, but is completely lost when the time comes to put those words into action. If given an ironclad guarantee tomorrow for worldwide WHITE POWER, with the one stipulation being that the name of Adolf Hitler never be mentioned again, Matt Koehl would reject the offer."
"As for me, I would rather shoulder axe (sic) & musket & march off into the savage wilderness to face unknown terrors, than to remain a part of an organization that is solely run by your personal whim and fancy. You say you are a leader, but you cannot make decisive decisions. You print that Matt Koehl is National Socialism, but refuse to reunify the entire movement, the reason is that you are the man who splintered it to start with. Your paranoic (sic) refusal to delegate authority has insured the Party's future to be that of a 3rd rate mail business, which is constantly on the brink of disaster. I CHARGE YOU WITH TREASON TO THE MOVEMENT."
"[Neo-Nazi skinheads are] homeless orphans, the pitiful product of alienation and anomie in a society which they correctly perceive as offering them nothing but hostility and hopelessness ... the crude rage of the disenfranchised. Their reaction is to strike out—here and now—to get it out of their systems, regardless of any possible consequences. But using their bald heads as battering rams, rather than instruments of higher thought, is hardly a recipe for success. Such immature behavior tends toward puerile yahooism, moronic spectacle and worse, and is therefore counterproductive to the efforts of any constructive cause."
"Ironically, Koehl's tenure saw both the high-water mark and the functional end of the National Socialist movement in America. Always minuscule, the ranks of the "organized" American National Socialist community attracted, in the immediate post-Rockwell period, a small but steady stream of the committed and the curious. Koehl thus appeared to outside observers to work on two concurrent tracks: a highly successful effort to anger and alienate the old guard while simultaneously leaving the new recruits with such a bad taste in their mouths that many left the movement, and others became lifelong enemies of the new Commander. It was by all accounts a singular performance. The roster of those harried from the National Socialist White People's Party reads like a virtual "Who's Who" of American National Socialism."
"Koehl's primary legacy, however, lies less in his contributions to American National Socialism than in his example of survival in the vortex of a movement famous for its tendency to devour its own."
"Whoever did it, it is of benefit only to the blacks and Jews of this country. It is a defeat for every white man. He was my commander. I think he'll go down in history as one of the greatest living Americans and one of the greatest white men of all time....I believe that despite what happened here, his death will inspire a victory for the white men of the country.... He wanted his work to go on."
"We are the very same Movement which arose in 1919, which was crushed in 1945, which was resurrected under the inspired leadership of Lincoln Rockwell, and which has persisted in a continuous, unbroken line up to this day."
"I was born a racist, I never could see the sense of mixing of blacks and whites, It's highly indecent. I've always believed in the establishment of an all-white America. What we know is coming is race war. Race war is just around the corner in historical terms. We expect there will be a serious American defeat in Vietnam because of the administration's no-win policy."
"Adolf Hitler was born on Earth. He became flesh and blood. He fought, and he died."
"Hitler lives in our very own hearts and minds.... Our Leader is risen. He is risen indeed!"
"Today we have only the rudiments. We are laying a foundation. The elaboration of our doctrines and the development of those formal usages and structures, such as one normally associates with the older religions, will involve the work of generations and centuries. But what is time when one is talking seriously about religion? How long did the Christians have to wait for Constantine to deliver a decadent Roman Empire into their hands? How often over the millennia did Diaspora Jewry repeat the ancient formula, "Next year in Jerusalem?" If it be the will of heaven, we too can tarry a bit."
"Adolf Hitler is National Socialism, just as National Socialism is Adolf Hitler."
"They altered the national demography and introduced us to integration, busing, Affirmative Action, minority quotas, sensitivity training, Black History and-the Holocaust. They gave us permissiveness, drugs, MTV and teen suicide. They gave us safe sex and unsafe streets and gun control. They gave us rock 'n roll and rape-counseling centers. They gave us 'alternative lifestyles,' sodomy, AIDS, filth, perversion, chaos, crime, corruption, dumbing down and insanity of every kind."
"We can make a start... and whether it takes 50 years, 100 years, 500 years or 1,000 years, the important thing is that one day—sooner or later—the cause of Adolf Hitler does indeed prevail on this earth."
"If Adolf Hitler stands as the author of National Socialism, then Commander Rockwell is certainly the St. Paul of the new Aryan creed."
"He is our law and guide as Aryans for all time to come. He is our hope, our redemption."
"No heresy has ever been so wholly and hopelessly false that it did not reflect at least some broken lights of truth. This we may rightly say of Socialism where truth and error, fact and fiction are forever blended in an indistinguishable confusion. What is good we must keep and perfect, what is wrong and evil we must relentlessly reject."
"Our religious convictions are not a private matter. We may think our lives are private but really they are not. Our concern for family values, our sense of honesty and decency, our dedication to the church our love for the things of God, in all of these things and so many more our attention is always directed beyond to someone else. This is the way to live our lives as clergy."
"We cannot use a time of so-called crisis as an excuse for feeling sorry for ourselves for declining numbers of occasion, neither should we blame the changes in the church or even the human faults and failings of her members."
"We have to focus on things like the promise and new possibilities that Jesus can give us, the reassurance of love that our intimate relationship with Jesus can offer, the peace and forgiveness that the Holy Spirit can bestow upon us and the revelation of the plan of God that the Sacred Scriptures can reveal to us. It is turning our minds to those positive realities that makes room for the light of faith to shine."
"Up until a month ago my aspiration was to be a good pastor in Lake Geneva. The motivation from the first day I went into the seminary, and something I'm proud to say I never lost, is my desire to be a pastor."
"On their own, the politics of representation are not enough to build a world where Black & Brown communities can thrive. We also need to focus our attention on structural changes to library systems, the organization of knowledge, & information literacy."
"To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
"We know white supremacy is not limited to politics or policies. It also shows up in culture, it shows up in stories."
"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color."
"It is the duty of all lay Catholics to bring to the attention of the pastors of the Church their needs, their desires, and their views of ecclesial matters. This duty is set forth in the chapter on the laity in the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, . So those lay Catholics who see "deconstructing" going on, it seems to me, should exercise their right and duty to make this known to those who they feel are engaged in such activities."
"I challenge any person who will not admit this in themselves, such as “the woman who relies on a closet full of funny, expensive clothing or makeup and lacquered hairdos”, because I could never be that...that which I was supposed to be...and I refuse to be identified with a woman like that. I CAN’T BE! My older sister is inferior to a transvestite becuz she can’t relax, she’s trying so hard to deny her inner humanity and free-ness, to bottle up any susceptibility to feelings—while a transvestite at the very least, admits to himself his inner life and feelings, and, at the most, if he comes out, he’s left wide open for rejection by family and friends, physical harm, denial of use of public and private facilities, easy prey for others to try and fuck his head over by saying he’s sick, etc.,—all for the sake of relaxing with themselves, being free and open and alive. You ask him to come alive to the world so the world can kill him."
"The reason “FAGS” have deep and painful personality problems is cuz people like you “realize (!) they are neurotic and isolating.” And then you ask them to mold their own lives! The people in Rechy have a hell of a lot more will than any straight—the will to say fuck you to all the assholes who hate them so intensely, to say fuck you to the world of people who think they’re sick and say fuck you, I’m ME . . . a lot more will than anyone else. But you say they just “seem generally to react resentfully to situations rather than mold their own lives.” Where do you mold a life for yourself when all you do is battle oppressions day in and day out? Where does a black begin to mold his own life when he’s alone among 200 KKKs, or a woman in a room with 50 men gawking at her tits and ass. They start at the bottom, that’s where!! They band together and say fuck you everybody this is me and I’m good."
"I’m not a lesbian. I don’t want to be either. I’ve always thought of myself as a male homosexual (try and figure that one out—I can’t)... I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for transvestite and gay men becuz they seemed to me to be the most beautiful inside—the most able to abandon stereotypes which, for men, I think, is a lot harder. I think they are one group that knows better than anyone that there’s no difference between men and women... But I’m not trying to deny my “femininity”, Dorothy, I’m just trying to sneak up on it thru the back door. The front door Avon lady approach didn’t even work. I’d like to get the best of both worlds . . . what I’m trying to do now is find out how to get them."
"The rise of the selfie is an especially big deal when considering how artists push away from it, a theme that unifies the past three winners. Each challenges the nature of subjectivity to move ultimately beyond the self to a more universal view of the subject, especially in relation to the artist and to the viewer and within the context of the history of portraiture. In 2006, David Lenz oil on linen portrait of his son, entitled Sam and the Perfect World depicts a child with Down Syndrome. For Lenz, this was the "most personal painting" he’d ever done. "It touches on all the various issues that challenge our family," he said. Without a hint of idealization or sentimentality, and without crossing the threshold into dramatizing the complex father-son relationship captured here, Sam is shown posed in front of a barbed wire fence. A bucolic country landscape with a pulsing sun reverberating in the pale blue sky proves the backdrop for a young boy wearing glasses and leaning toward the viewer with his brow slightly furrowed and his arms behind his back. Is he hiding something? Or trying to tell us something? There is something inscrutable and endearing about his expression that makes us want to spend time with him. In his red T-shirt and Oshkosh overalls he is in some ways a classic little boy. And yet he is not. As Lenz says, "Sam is the opposite of the idealized 'perfect" countryside. Nevertheless, I think he has something very important to say." Remniscent of Charles Willson Peale’s The Artist in His Museum (1822), Lenz has crafted a masterful composition with extraordinary technical skill."
"In America today, perfection is highly valued. We dump loads of chemicals on our lawns to try and get rid of every weed, every dandelion. Models and supermodels are tall, impossibly fit, their clothes stylish and wrinkle-free. Images like this tend to change our perceptions, our ideals, until finally they leave us looking around at the peeling paint on our own houses, and our less than fit bodies, and it leaves us wanting. Perfection, I would submit, is overrated. And besides, I like dandelions. In the painting Sam assumes the role of presenter, host, even tutor, of this most revealing examination of the civilization man has made for himself. Sam is not society's accepted definition of perfection. In spite of that, or perhaps because of that, he really does have an important message for everyone to hear."
"You can have all your scientific method down, all your experiments done accurately and recorded in minute detail. But most of the significant, universe-changing advances in science were not done by methodically plodding ahead with reasonable steps. Things like Einstein's theory of relativity or the foundations of quantum mechanics came about more as hunches. Scientists talk about a theory being elegant - it just feels right. Sometimes you have to just trust your instincts. People often talk about following your head or your heart, but sometimes there's a deeper feeling you follow. Sometimes you follow your guts, your instincts. Scientists are also trained to do that."
"I also love working for the government (no really!). There is more security working for a government lab and I didn't have to get tenure. The people at NASA are so good -so dedicated, so fun to be with"
"The secular iconoclasm of the current moment will not bring reconciliation, peace, and healing. Such violence will only perpetuate the prejudice and hatred it ostensibly seeks to end. Religious freedom, given to man by God Himself, and guaranteed by our Constitution, allows us as Catholics to practice our faith, build our churches, pray in public, put up statues and crucifixes on our property, and serve the common good through a remarkable network of health care, schools, and social services. We must not surrender our religious liberty to the voices that seek the destruction of our public presence, the diminishing of our sacramental worship, and the denial of our belief in Jesus Christ as the savior of the world. Only the love of Christ can heal a wounded heart, not a vandalized piece of metal."
"In Her missionary outreach, some in the Church at times have mistakenly equated the fullness of Catholicism with European culture. We have learned over time, as have others, to approach a different culture with respect and humility, recognizing the inherently authentic human elements already present in each person and place. We attempt to maintain unity in that which is essential, and diversity in those things which are not. A robust proclamation of the Gospel will purify every culture of its negative and destructive elements, but will leave intact its beauty, goodness, and truth. Belief in Jesus as Our Lord and Savior only makes us more fully human and more deeply rooted in the worth of our respective culture and country."
"Jewish women in second-wave feminism helped to provide the theoretical underpinnings and models for radical action that were seized on and imitated throughout the United States and abroad. Their articles and books became classics of the movement and led the way into new arenas of cultural and political understanding in academe, politics, and grassroots organizing. Even a partial honor roll of Jewish women's liberation pioneers must include such figures as Shulamith Firestone, Ellen Willis, Robin Morgan, Alix Kates Shulman, Naomi Weisstein, Heather Booth, Susan Brownmiller, Marilyn Webb, Meredith Tax, Andrea Dworkin, Linda Gordon, Ellen DuBois, Ann Snitow, Marge Piercy, Letty Cottin Pogrebin, and Vivian Gornick. Despite historians' acknowledgment of the salience of Jewish women in earlier social movements, their prominence within radical feminism failed to attract much attention."
"A lot of the young women in the peace movement were really just pushed around by SDS (the student organization). That is, Meredith Tax or Marge Piercy were pushed around by these guys, these young fellows in these student movements, who were really not shallow because they were very smart, but callow and full of male beans and ambition and so forth. And accustomed to or forced to play a certain role. I think the women's movement has done a lot for men, a tremendous lot for them. For men who paid attention it has taken some of the burden of machoism off their backs, which is a terrible burden to bear. If you think about it, it's horrible. It's horrible to have to be that kind of person in order to be a person."
"In our times, to refrain from mentioning genocide, racism, cultural schizophrenia, sexual exploitation, and the systematic starvation of entire populations is itself a political act. ... As our bankrupt civilization draws to its close, and as the violence of the powerful against the weak, of the rich against the poor, of the few against the many, becomes more and more apparent, until it becomes impossible to watch a news broadcast and remain unaware of it for a second — as this situation becomes exacerbated, to refrain from mentioning it becomes more and more clearly a political act, an act of censorship or cowardice."
"Cultural products which present foreign wars as the heroic effort of a master race to ennoble mankind are, to the degree they are successful as art, objectively in the interests of imperialists, who are people who make foreign wars against other races for profit."
"Cultural products that present people who have no money or power as innately stupid or depraved, and thus unworthy of money or power, are in the interests of the ruling class and the power structure as it stands."
"Cultural products which present women who do not want to be household slaves or universal mothers or sex objects as bitches or sexual failures objectively aid male supremacy."
"When I went to college, I went to study Veterinary Medicine, which I still study. But I had to take classes with the Animal Science people in the college of Agriculture. … One class I had to take they made the students from part of the class go into a chicken coop and pick out a live chicken and slaughter it themselves. Then we were supposed to take it home and eat it. And I refused to do it. So I ended up getting a C at the class, even though I had As in everything else. … I also had to take a class where I would take care of animals, pigs and cows, and I got to know them. I actually had a cow that I took care of, raised from when she was a baby and I had her till she was about 800 pounds. She would run up to me, she knew me well, just like a dog. She was exactly like a dog. It was sort of the same with the pigs, the babies knew me. And after I had to go in and see what happened to them, it totally broke my heart and it made me sick to my stomach. … There's no way, you know, if you're human and you have a normal brain and mind and feelings, that you can see what I saw and still eat them and allow them to be slaughtered and be ok with it."
Young though he was, his radiant energy produced such an impression of absolute reliability that Hedgewar made him the first sarkaryavah, or general secretary, of the RSS.
- Gopal Mukund Huddar
Largely because of the influence of communists in London, Huddar's conversion into an enthusiastic supporter of the fight against fascism was quick and smooth. The ease with which he crossed from one worldview to another betrays the fact that he had not properly understood the world he had grown in.
Huddar would have been 101 now had he been alive. But then centenaries are not celebrated only to register how old so and so would have been and when. They are usually celebrated to explore how much poorer our lives are without them. Maharashtrian public life is poorer without him. It is poorer for not having made the effort to recall an extraordinary life.
I regret I was not there to listen to Balaji Huddar's speech [...] No matter how many times you listen to him, his speeches are so delightful that you feel like listening to them again and again.
By the time he came out of Franco's prison, Huddar had relinquished many of his old ideas. He displayed a worldview completely different from that of the RSS, even though he continued to remain deferential to Hedgewar and maintained a personal relationship with him.
