"Although he never visited America, he appeals particularly to Americans."
"Science is systematic organisation of knowledge about the universe on the basis of explanatory hypotheses which are genuinely testable. Science advances by developing gradually more comprehensive theories; that is, by formulating theories of greater generality which can account for observational statements and hypotheses which appear as prima facie unrelated."
"Although he confirmed many Indians, he complained of the universal ignorance of Christian doctrine."
"I love having the gift of friendliness, because thanks to that gift, I've been able to talk about Jesus to those around me. Now I wouldn't change my relationship with God, which in the end required me to distance myself from many things in my life that weren't coherent. The secret of my happiness is my faith. It's in knowing that living in this world is tough, but that God sees everything, and if He permits it, one day I will be with Him."
"the capitalist class...is not capable of making sacrifices."
"Without goals to aim for and without any figures on the horizon in whom we can crystallize our life and our need for encouragement and for example, what would our lives be?"
"Although It may be our aim, to attempt a total conquest at that time would have meant a broken front, and consequently failure. The fact Is that we were the first to modify our aspirations, the first to understand that the struggle against International fascism was In itself great enough. The struggle is so great that the triumph over fascism alone is worth the sacrifice of our lives. Fascism which desires to become the master of all those who are free in spirit, Everyone-from the most moderate Republican to the most extreme Anarchist-has placed their hope and faith In the struggle which unites them."
"The most interesting women in modern European history appear in the ranks of radical political movements. It is difficult to find conservative or traditional counterparts equal to Louise Michel, Emma Goldman, and Rosa Luxemburg. Even Isadora Duncan, creator of modern dance, flirted with communism. More thoughtful and articulate and certainly as politically active as any of these women is the lesser known Spanish anarchist, Federica Montseny. On asking what attracted these women to radical politics, one discovers in each a commitment to feminism. No person, not even Emma Goldman, explored this necessary relationship between feminist and socialist principles more provocatively than did Federica Montseny."
"Blessed are those whose souls are transparent, whose lives are honest, and whose hearts are pure; for theirs is the kingdom of the earth. Blessed are those who believe in human goodness, those who preserve their illusions intact and nourish the hope that for them the doors of life will open. Blessed are those who offer the world their fraternal right hand and friendly visage, those who go with a smile on their lips and cast a light before them. And blessed, too, are those who can love those who can believe, those who can discover within the human wasteland, a tree under which their anxieties concerning their ideal, and their human desires for trust and affection, can take shelter."
"In Russia, Communist Party administration has succeeded in reconstructing economy-but at the cost of a dictatorship and the submission of a whole people to mere obedience. It is our idea to construct a society directed by the workers' organisations having the complete control of the economic wealth of the land."
"One does not see the size of a mountain until one draws away from it. But away in the distance we turn and look and wonder. Have we really come so far? How did we manage to overcome so many serious difficulties in such a cruel and unequal struggle?"
"Down with the schoolmasters and down with the priests, down with the redeemers and down with sterile icons! Down with the era of messiahs and saviors, of shepherds put at the head of human herds! Down with the icons, the personifications in wood or in flesh of human ignorance and powerlessness; down with the icons which, dead or alive, attempt to assume the role of the directors of our lives, the depositories of eternal verities, the representatives of absolute ideas, the holders of religious or moral power over men."
"After the Russian Revolution a strong movement of the masses developed in Spain, which is the best reply to fascism."
"We tried many times before to speed on the social revolution in Spain; attempted to stir up the feelings of the people and to raise the banner of Libertarian Communism. Since the establishment of the Republic we were the only ones who kept the masses alive; the only ones who remained faithful to their revolutionary creed. Without our continued vigilance, Spain to-day would be very different. A timid democracy, a reformist socialism would have held back the masses. Our constancy, same might call it our madness, was necessary to wear down the oppressive forces of the old democracy which, in Spain, was a hundred years behind the times."
"The love of liberty and the sense of human dignity are the basic elements of the Anarchist creed. We need no messiah and no sterile conception of a god menacing us with hell and purgatory. Love, as the basis of life will bind us together. But we must create in each person a sense of responsibility in order that each one of us can have the right to enjoy all his rights. This is an unique movement for us all, because circumstances to-day in Spain have never before existed during any other revolution. Neither the French nor the Russian revolution. To-day, a sense of sacrifice impels us to renounce our aspirations and individual interests for the well-being of all. It is this sense of responsibility which shows us the path of duty and assists us in performing it. In this way, we will avoid the fatal mistake of dictatorship. In Spain, we should have enough intelligence, enough sense of individual and collective responsibility to do for ourselves that which would be imposed upon us by a dictatorship. Very soon we will give to the world the example of a free land, that stood up without arms opposed, as a single man, to fascism, to the mentality of capitalism. It will be an example, worthy of being followed by the rest of the world. We are proud of our responsibility. The greatest joy of our lives is a determination to sacrifice all-to give all-that this dream will be realised-the union of the proletariat to obtain our fundamental aims: BREAD AND FREEDOM FOR ALL!"
"it must not be forgotten that this is not only a civil war-a social war is also being waged. It is the war of the common people against the rich, against the militarists, against the politicians-all of whom were responsible for the misery and poverty of the proletariat. The political parties were incapable of creating a new moral value in Spain and were unable to oppose the military conspirators. They were mere accomplices of the traitor generals."
"At a time of great migrations that arouse suspicion and rejection, the Church wants to respond with the force of charity, to create the culture of encounter."
"Unemployment is the gateway for many families to poverty and social exclusion, but employment is not always the way out of social exclusion because the salary received is not sufficient to meet the minimum requirements of a dignified life."
"The more this "romanity" is felt in the daily existence of Priests and of the other lay faithful, the more effective will be our contribution towards the building up of the Church in Europe and, from Europe, in the whole world."
"For now, our work is to show the face of Christ, to make Him present, to sow the seed. In reality, the anti-proselytism climate is not much different from some clearly anti-church obstacles in the West."
"The main aspect of these Churches of ours in North Africa is dialogue and encounter with the Muslims who are our neighbours. To create bonds of friendship, of encounter, of love, in the variety of who we are, making friendships. Because we can talk and appreciate each other based on that friendship. I believe that friendship is at the base of all interreligious dialogue."
"Even though the media has repeated it so many times, the Pope has not decided that we are going to return to celebrating the Mass in Latin. To say such a thing is not only ignorant, it's also thoughtless. It has always been permitted to celebrate the Mass in Latin, even after Vatican II, and the books of the liturgical reform were written in Latin and later translated into the different languages."
"Notwithstanding its errors and sins, Christian history succeeded in tracing paths of freedom, dignity, goodness and truth."
"To play God today is to be the owner of human life, to control that life in all of his stages and all of its forms. A control that decides who must be eliminated and when."
"This Pope has removed two or three bishops per month throughout the world because either the accounts in their dioceses were a mess or their discipline was a disaster."
"It's important to work together. And to transmit this necessity of continuing to help these people, to assist these people, with prayers and spiritual assistance, but also with concrete assistance...to contact authorities, to engage more in promoting peace and development. Also because it's the best way to avoid the problem of migration. Instead of trying to cover the emergency here (in Europe), to try to solve the problems at the root so that people don't have to leave their countries."
"We encourage, especially the Christians, we encourage them to remain there because we think that their presence is so important for the country. Not just for the Church, that is so important, but also for society because they can play a very important role. And to encourage them to remain I always tell them that they have a very special mission that no one can play in their place. They have a special mission of being Christians in the Holy Land, of being Christians in a context that is difficult but is very necessary."
"The graveyard is full of good intentions, but people never fulfil them. I'm different, I go for it. I've got myself all the way here."
"I'm very eccentric. I do everything excessively. Maybe some people tell me I'm crazy. Others maybe say I'm vain. Others say something else, but everyone is wrong. I'm not crazy."
"God has created wonders with circles. The sun and moon are circles. The eye is round and it's beautiful. The circle is from God, but the angle is the Devil's doing."
"The world is vain. The world is ungrateful. I have to search for the truth. Do the opposite of what others do."
"I saw the Communists destroy all the churches here, with people laughing and dancing in the ruins. But when you believe, you can then also rebuild with your own hands a beautiful new place."
"I demand a lot from myself, I reflect a lot, I search for the truth. That's what I was born to do, to be a witness to the truth."
"As a Catholic, I have to be authentic. When I watch a football match, I never see all of it, and I ask God to forgive me for watching it. Because for me, it's idolatry. A man can't sell a football player for five billion. That's paganism."
"He's a very crazy person. Everyone says he's crazy, everyone. I also think he's crazy. The way he speaks, the way he lives, it makes him crazy."
"My love of Christ means I will go to the ends of the world. People get tired and bored because they have no ideals. They haven't given themselves to Christ, the creator."
"Perhaps the origin of the idea and the message got lost along the way. The slogan wasn't, "what a man is capable of doing for his faith". Instead, it was, "what a man, with faith in himself, can achieve". But if we take the religious aspect out of Justo, we cease to understand him."
"He's able to give life to things that no longer have it. That's also very connected to Christianity."
"When you see the structure from afar, and without knowing what it is, it can seem a little messy and chaotic, maybe a little poorly built. But when you realize it was built by one man alone, you get goosebumps."
"I think he's making a fool out of himself for his whole life, because he'll never finish it."
"I do it for faith. That's clear, no?"
"You can't build a cathedral, or even a house, without complex calculations and without studies in architecture. But Justo has no education of any kind, not even primary school. So, finding a human explanation for the building seems even more difficult to me than finding a supernatural one."
"I think you start to think someone is crazy when you see him from a distance, and when he is too different it makes him a madman. But when you get closer to him, you start to see his point. All of a sudden it dawned on me that the cathedral was built for the greatest reason in the world. When I see the building, I think I also want to build it in my life. Not a building, but I want to build it with my wife. An invisible building, but one you've built with love, with thousands of details, so that when you reach the end of your life, you've left a physical metaphor that shows that love endures."
"If pastors and theologians are asked to reflect and follow the direction indicated by the Holy Father, they are certainly not obliged to think that the proposed approach, with the preambles supporting it, are exempt from danger, nor that the advice given is appropriate. They are even fully justified in drawing the attention of the Holy See of the bishops to the serious ambiguities of the underlying doctrine and on the dangers of the proposed pastoral care."
"If you lean on a straight stick... [it] can resist your weight, despite its slenderness, as long as it remains straight; once it starts to bend, it will easily break. The danger of breaking increases with the deflection... [T]he danger of failure will diminish with the increased of the cross section, or if the same are of cross section should be maintained, by distributing the material in a hollow section."
"Even children know that drafting rule is easier to bend flat than across the edges; and... they will not be much surprised if told that for the same width of the rule its resistance is proportional to the square of the thickness and the deflection is inversely proportional to the cube of the thickness. Nevertheless some modern designers seem to be unaware... since they require... beams of such slenderness that they resemble springboards..."
"In general, these phenomena are very easy to perceive and understand, but difficult to calculate. The danger of failure increases rapidly with decreasing depth or thickness of the structural member..."
"Stress phenomena are... not independent of scale, as was the case pertaining to simple external static equilibrium. ...with increasing dimensions of a structural element the volume and therefore the proper weight increases more rapidly than its cross-sectional areas..."
"[E]xperimental investigation of stresses in a plane structure is of great interest and merit as applied to shells with single curvature (barrel shells, pipes) and to shells with double curvature (domes, etc.). In these structures similar states of stress are produced and can be determined at any point as acting in a plane tangential to the center layer of the shell."
"[M]ost of our structures in the past consisted of individual members having relatively small transverse dimensions as compared with their length, and in such members stress analysis is much more simple. ...[M]any modern structures consist of frameworks of this type, and frequently the word "structure" refers specifically to assemblies consisting of linear elements."
Young though he was, his radiant energy produced such an impression of absolute reliability that Hedgewar made him the first sarkaryavah, or general secretary, of the RSS.
- Gopal Mukund Huddar
Largely because of the influence of communists in London, Huddar's conversion into an enthusiastic supporter of the fight against fascism was quick and smooth. The ease with which he crossed from one worldview to another betrays the fact that he had not properly understood the world he had grown in.
Huddar would have been 101 now had he been alive. But then centenaries are not celebrated only to register how old so and so would have been and when. They are usually celebrated to explore how much poorer our lives are without them. Maharashtrian public life is poorer without him. It is poorer for not having made the effort to recall an extraordinary life.
I regret I was not there to listen to Balaji Huddar's speech [...] No matter how many times you listen to him, his speeches are so delightful that you feel like listening to them again and again.
By the time he came out of Franco's prison, Huddar had relinquished many of his old ideas. He displayed a worldview completely different from that of the RSS, even though he continued to remain deferential to Hedgewar and maintained a personal relationship with him.
