"We have come up with several feasible measures (in promoting Kinmen in Fujian) and I'll do my best to let local people sense the enthusiasm of the Kinmen County government."
"As a local government, Kinmen should avoid becoming embroiled in (cross-strait) political affairs, but the county needs to seize opportunities (with Mainland China) when the atmosphere is right. Fujian and Kinmen are neighbors and during the trip to the (Fujian) province, the (Kinmen) county government can put forward ideas on future exchanges and cooperation between the two sides, in the hope of concrete results."
"It (referendum by Kinmen County residents which voted against the establishment of casinos in Kinmen) showed that Kinmen folks were thinking about development (of the county) in the long term, instead of being shortsighted and allowing themselves to be lured by profits (from casinos) close at hand."
"Kinmen will become a rapidly developing free economic pilot zone and base for peaceful cross-strait development."
"Relations across the strait, whether war or peace, now lies in the hands of presidents Chen Shui-bian and Jiang Zemin."
"The building of the Jindeng Bridge will not only help hone Taiwan's bridge building technologies, it will also help boost development in Kinmen itself. The Jindeng Bridge will facilitate the building of water pipes and electricity transmission cables between Kinmen and Xiamen, allowing Kinmen to import fresh water and electricity from (Mainland) China. A move that would also manifest Taiwan's sincerity in pursuing peace and co-prosperity with (Mainland) China."
"In my political career, I have completed 'Mission: Impossible' three times (with regards to cross-strait relations)."
"The affections between people from Kinmen and the mainland (China) are as thick as blood. Our ancestors all come from the same place. Our daily lives, economy, culture and language are almost the same. That's key reason why we (Kinmen people) feel close to each other. Basically nobody in Kinmen supports Taiwan's independence. What's going to happen to Kinmen if Taiwan declares independence? As a result, it's easier for Kinmen to do business with the mainland. Beijing is also more willing to provide more preferential treatments to Kinmen as opposed to Taiwan (island). Kinmen is not big, so we must develop our economy along with Fujian province and the rest of (mainland) China. We hope we can do that because we have no other choices."
"I'd like them (Mainland Chinese) to live here (Kinmen) too. I hope someday they can buy property here and their children could come to school here."
Young though he was, his radiant energy produced such an impression of absolute reliability that Hedgewar made him the first sarkaryavah, or general secretary, of the RSS.
- Gopal Mukund Huddar
Largely because of the influence of communists in London, Huddar's conversion into an enthusiastic supporter of the fight against fascism was quick and smooth. The ease with which he crossed from one worldview to another betrays the fact that he had not properly understood the world he had grown in.
Huddar would have been 101 now had he been alive. But then centenaries are not celebrated only to register how old so and so would have been and when. They are usually celebrated to explore how much poorer our lives are without them. Maharashtrian public life is poorer without him. It is poorer for not having made the effort to recall an extraordinary life.
I regret I was not there to listen to Balaji Huddar's speech [...] No matter how many times you listen to him, his speeches are so delightful that you feel like listening to them again and again.
By the time he came out of Franco's prison, Huddar had relinquished many of his old ideas. He displayed a worldview completely different from that of the RSS, even though he continued to remain deferential to Hedgewar and maintained a personal relationship with him.
