"It is not me that is hiding, it is you who are lying!"
"Yes, I have been swimming! There's nothing like the shock of cold water and rhythmic movement to stimulate the little grey cells."
"I myself timed the journey. But then I was not running like a young gazelle, for obvious reasons."
"Madame, there is nothing like a good night's rest to clear the little grey cells. Kindly ask all our friends to foregather in the lounge after they have finished their petit dejeuner, when all will be revealed."
"Mesdames, Mademoiselle, Messieurs — the reason I asked you to meet me here this morning — please, Monsieur — is that I, Hercule Poirot, have discovered the identity of the murderer of Madame Marshall. This need surprise no one. Are you all comfortable? Even the murderer?"
"A picture of innocence."
"You see, it is folly to try and trick Hercule Poirot... even in a dead language."
"Dear Monsieur Poirot, a word in your ear. The whole world knows that you are a man of enormous discretion and gallantry, a man not only privy to the secrets of kings and prime ministers, but also a man who would never willingly stand by and see a lady in trouble without rushing to her aid. I appeal to you now, as just such a frail woman, in need of help. In fact I throw myself on your mercy. Couldn't we make this a private investigation? You know how peculiar people can be about a spot of murder."
"Arlena and I were in the chorus of a show together, not that I could ever compete. Even in those days, she could always throw her legs up in the air higher than any of us... and wider."
"Look, I was wrong about cherchez la femme. Sorry about that, but it's quite obviously cherchez le fruit. Rex, see, is the only one unaccounted for."
"If I can't see you faces shining in every knife, fork and spoon, I'll have your guts for garters! Understood?"
"Have you ever met a Tyranian doctor, Monsieur Poirot? The limit of their skill is determining the fitness of an ox to pull a cart."
"Monsieur Poirot, you have the French obsession — I'm sorry, Belgian obsession — with crime passionnel. But you're barking up the wrong tree."
"Don't believe all that about her being too weedy. Women fight like tigers when losing their husbands. Not that I've had much experience at that sort of thing myself."
"Thank you for those three hours of sheer, and unadulterated hell! This may come as a nasty surprise to you but shock absorbers have been standardized equipment on motorized vehicles for thirty years!"
"Linda, do stop standing there like a coughdrop and say good morning to Monsieur Poirot!"
"If it's fun you're looking for, darling, go play with the jellyfish."
"She runs like a dromedary with dropsy."
"If that's Arlena, she must be being dressed by Woolworths these days."

"Evil is Everywhere. Even in Paradise."
"Have a good time, my dear Poirot..."

Young though he was, his radiant energy produced such an impression of absolute reliability that Hedgewar made him the first sarkaryavah, or general secretary, of the RSS.
- Gopal Mukund Huddar
Largely because of the influence of communists in London, Huddar's conversion into an enthusiastic supporter of the fight against fascism was quick and smooth. The ease with which he crossed from one worldview to another betrays the fact that he had not properly understood the world he had grown in.
Huddar would have been 101 now had he been alive. But then centenaries are not celebrated only to register how old so and so would have been and when. They are usually celebrated to explore how much poorer our lives are without them. Maharashtrian public life is poorer without him. It is poorer for not having made the effort to recall an extraordinary life.
I regret I was not there to listen to Balaji Huddar's speech [...] No matter how many times you listen to him, his speeches are so delightful that you feel like listening to them again and again.
By the time he came out of Franco's prison, Huddar had relinquished many of his old ideas. He displayed a worldview completely different from that of the RSS, even though he continued to remain deferential to Hedgewar and maintained a personal relationship with him.
