"Like many West Indians of my generation, I have been reading C. L. R. James’s Black Jacobins over and over for many years. I know many of its passages by heart... I found myself reading The Black Jacobins differently. I found myself wondering about the distance that separated James and me; I found myself looking back at James looking toward me and thinking that I inhabit as a dead-end present the postcolonial future he lived as a fervent expectation and hope... I think that The Black Jacobins offers us a very tantalizing hint, one that has everything to do with modernity. I mean if you compare the story of slavery told in the body of the text (which belongs to 1938) to the one told in the appendix, “From Toussaint L’Ouverture to Fidel Castro” (which belongs to 1963), a very interesting contrast comes into view. Whereas the earlier story belongs to the familiar resistance narrative of slavery-as-repressive-power (remember the great first chapter, “The Property”), the later story underlines something else, namely, the power that produced the subjects of a distinctive civilization—a power, in other words, that didn’t only negate (“demoralize” is the word James uses here) the humanity of the slave, but contributed to structuring and shaping the conditions of a particular form of humanity."

Seeing this, the Lombards who were with the king quickly took up their arms and sprang into their saddles; the king, himself, went out together with them, like men inexperienced in the warfare of the Romans. Around fifty men rode back and forth; and those who had pillaged fled with the booty in order to bring them into the ambuscades. Thereupon, those who were lying in hiding leaped out of ambush on all sides and began to shoot arrows at the Lombards; the Cumans, who had pretended to be fleeing, rode around behind them and shot arrows at the chargers. And when the Lombards and Boniface, their lord, the king of Salonika, saw that they had encircled them and were shooting arrows at them, gathered themselves all together, to live and to die. But the Cumans and the Romans did not come close to them; they shot at them with their arrows from afar and in this way they killed them and did them to death. From that time on, as I am telling you, with deceit and guile, as is their way, the Romans fought battles with the Franks, taking and losing them, as is the way of battles and campaigns everywhere, until three years had passed."

These faiths and Christianity (which is essentially Manichaean) assured their followers that the good spirit would win in the end; but of this consummation history offers no guarantee. Nature and history do not agree with our conceptions of good and bad; they define good as that which survives, and bad is that which goes under; and the universe has no prejudice in favor of Christ as against Genghis Khan."
